I was introduced to The Secret in the beginning of February 2008 when my cousin began to read it. A month or so after reading the book I was discussing it with one of my aunts’ daughters. She did not believe in the Secret then, and I was in the process of convincing her that positive thinking is the key to what one wants. And though I hadn’t begun to use the teachings of the Secret consciously then, I realized that I had used it a couple of times in the past without realizing that I was implementing the Secret.

My paternal grandmother had come down from the United Kingdom in December 2006. As I sat in the drawing room listening to her talk about my cousins, niece, and aunt, I just, out of the blue, told her that one of my wishes was to go and visit them there in the UK. I told her that I’d do that either when I begin to work or probably after graduation. Now, I didn’t have the money to pay for the tickets to and fro, nor for my daily expenditure in the UK. But somehow I just knew I would. And for reasons not known to me, I thought that I would do this alone. Not surprising enough, I forgot about the whole thing.

A few months before November 2007, I got a mail from my cousin’s sister in Glasgow saying that she was excited about me coming to the UK. Now this mail really took me by surprise, as I wasn’t aware of any kind of trip I was making out of the state, let alone India. Since my grandmother was going back to the UK in November that year, I thought there might have been some miscommunication and my cousin must have got the wrong message. Anyways, that day when I spoke to my Mom, I told her about the amusing mail. That’s when my Mum told me that I just might be going to the UK. I couldn’t believe my ears. Since my grandmother is past 80 years of age, she wanted someone to accompany her rather than travel alone. And since my parents were busy at work and my brother undergoing military training elsewhere, it was only obvious that I would go.

The expenses also worked out. My parents were initially hesitant to send me due to lack of finances, but my father’s elder brother who lives in Canada agreed to sponsor my trip. In addition, when my Dad was going to give me money to spend in the UK, my grandmother insisted that she give me pocket money. And so I was given 100 pounds. Things just fell into place, and I was off to the United Kingdom in November 2007, less than a year from when I proclaimed that I would be visiting my relatives there.

Now when I look back, I realize that I was implementing the Secret already, but only rarely. Now, I have begun to believe that your thoughts can alter your life. And I am beginning to think positive. Every day.
