When you read the news or look out upon the world today, you may well find that there are many things that you would dearly love to change. Perhaps it’s injustice, inequality, poverty, famine, prejudice, violence, loss of freedom, or civil rights. You may feel compelled to sign a petition, join a rally, or march in protest. Or you may choose to make a bold statement through some form of civil disobedience or dissent. Just bear in mind though, that no matter how noble your cause is, there is an inescapable law called the law of attraction that governs your thoughts and actions. No-one can avoid this law.
A law you cannot break
The reason why we cannot break the law of attraction is really quite simple. When we take from another, we will be taken from; and when we harm another, we will most certainly bring harm to ourselves. Religious and spiritual texts warn us of this. It’s not personal retribution, but a rebalancing of the energy we send out. By the law of attraction, this must return to us at the same veracity and force that we sent it out. We are One, so we cannot wish for something for ourselves that will bring harm to others. If we do, the only one harmed will be ourselves.
The second reason that you cannot break the law of attraction is simply that the more you protest against a bad situation, and the more you are focused on that bad situation, the more the situation will persist in the world around you.
“What you resist persists”
It was the renowned Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Jung (1875–1961), who taught us that whatever you resist persists. What he meant by that is the more you resist anything in life, the more you bring it to you. The reason you attract whatever you resist is because you are powerfully focused on it with strong feelings and emotion, and what you focus on with any emotion, you bring to you.
This is why anti-war rallies often break out in violence. It’s also why a protest against injustice leads to innocent people getting arrested. And it’s why a politician that most people despise seems to get re-elected every single time.
By focusing with strong feelings on what you don’t want, you can’t help but attract it.
Passion for what you don’t want
Most people don’t realize how much passion they put into what they don’t want. When you speak to a friend and you tell them all about an “awful” situation, you are putting passion into what you don’t want. If you react to an event negatively, with the response that it is “terrible,” you are putting passion into what you don’t want. And according to The Secret, whatever you passionately don’t want, you are in fact, inviting to you.
You are a beautiful passionate being, so make sure you direct your emotions wisely. You do that by putting the power of your passionate emotions into what you do want, and through the law of attraction, you bring those things to you.
In the original documentary film, The Secret, Jack Canfield describes how Mother Teresa refused to attend anti-war rallies. However, she said she would happily come to a peace rally if she was ever invited. It’s not that she disagreed with the aims of the anti-war movement. She simply recognised that in order for them to achieve their goals, they needed to be focussed on what they wanted rather than on what they didn’t want. Mother Teresa understood the law of attraction. She knew The Secret.
Flip to the positive
When you find yourself thinking about something negative, or reacting to something negative, or even protesting against something negative, stop what you are doing and flip to its opposite – the positive. You can tell the difference because the negative are things that you don’t want, while the positive are things that you do want. Easy. If you made flipping to the positive a regular practice, your life would take off and spiral upwards with no limit on how high it could go. Life is really easy – it’s all about staying focused on what you do want instead of what you don’t want.
Mary River Forever
The most inspiring real-world example of this occurred several years ago on the Mary River, just inland of the Sunshine Coast in Australia. The government of the day announced a plan to dam the Mary River in order to create a massive reservoir to help alleviate a long-term drought afflicting the region. Unfortunately, this dam was projected to have a major environmental impact, threatening ecosystems and endangered species including indigenous turtles, frogs, birds, and fish. There was also a substantial human cost as fertile farmland would be left permanently underwater, and small towns and communities displaced. Tens of thousands of local residents protested the plans and a resistance movement was quickly organised. Billboards and posters and bumper stickers were seen all around town expressing fierce objections to the dam. Despite all of this community resistance, the dam project continued unabated.
Then one of the community organizers discovered The Secret. She came to realise that all of the focus of the protest was upon the dam, and that they were simply adding their energy to the project. She convinced her fellow organisers to change tack, to let go of their resistance to the dam, and to focus attention upon the Mary River. Instead, they agreed to celebrate its natural beauty and abundance of life. They had printed new posters and bumper stickers with the slogan “Mary River Forever!”
With this new, positive message, and by letting go of their resistance, the community campaign fortunes turned around almost immediately. The Australian Federal Government officially cancelled the project. There would be no dam and the Mary River would indeed be forever.
(The Secret team was inspired by the Mary River Forever campaign to create our own Planet Earth Forever YouTube video – a celebration of our beautiful planet, which has been viewed more than 6 million times. You can see it here.)
Let go of your resistance
In this moment can you let go of the resistance you’re holding around current world events? Can you just let it go? Can you let go of wanting to change things, wanting to fix things, wanting to control things? And can you let go of wanting things to be different, and just allow what is happening – just as it is? This is how you let go of resistance. And as you now know, it’s your resistance to something that holds that very situation to you. To let go of your resistance just let go of wanting to change anything. Relax, let go of wanting to change things some more. Relax even more, and now you have let go of any resistance, and you have allowed everything to change.
On the other hand, holding on to resistance is like trying to change life after it has happened. It’s a futile pursuit. As you resist what has happened, you are adding more energy and more power to what you don’t like. And when you do that, you are bringing more of it at a furious rate. The event or circumstances can only get bigger, because that is the law of attraction.
To change your world, first change your thinking
When something has happened that you do not want, it is your cue to change your thinking to the opposite. If it is a world situation, you are not powerless. You have all the power. So focus on everybody being in joy. Focus on abundance of food for everyone. And focus on the end result of equality and justice for all. Give your powerful thoughts to what you really want. You have the ability to give so much to the world by emitting feelings of love and well-being, despite what is happening around you.
You are the master of your life, and the Universe is answering your every command. Don’t become mesmerized by the world’s happenings if they are not what you want. Deliberately think new thoughts of the outcome you want, feel the outcome, and be grateful that what you want is already done.
Are you beginning to see the phenomenal power you have in this world, just through your existence? As you focus on the good things you feel good, and you are bringing more good things to the world. At the same time, you are bringing more good things into your own life. When you feel good you uplift your life, and you uplift the world!
