The Pursuit of More Joy
Submitted by: Joy Moore
Pittsburgh, PAAs a child, I was always embarrassed by my name. I received a lot of teasing when the teacher called last name first, Moore Joy. However, as an adult, my name is a blessing. I am on a journey, pursuit, or path to put more joy in others lives.
As a bartender for over a decade, I know that every person that sits on a stool has a story. I’m sure that you, like me, have heard most. I will try to make mine as brief as possible but I hope that you understand the desire inside me.
*Healthy and happy until age 29 when I began having seizures
*Knew that brain surgery was impending and little chance of speaking (or living for that matter) Also, told that I could not have children
*My fiancee never wavered and went ahead with wedding (suddenly, the color of flowers, etc, was very trivial)
*Had craniotomy six weeks after wedding and took out small part of damaged brain
*Speech and memory impaired, but much better than expected
*Look on life very different and strong desire to achieve goals
*Eleven months after surgery, I completed a marathon
*Fifteen months later, I finished what I started and graduated from college
*3 years later, I had a beautiful, healthy baby girl
It has now been 5 years since surgery. The words that I have received from you have played a big roll in my success. I feel the need to give back now. I want to support others who are hitting the wall of struggle and I’m unsure how to begin. I know that there is an answer awaiting me and I feel that this site is the start to find it. Thank you for your time.
