Movin’ on Up!
Submitted by: Lisa
Windsor, Ontario, CanadaI work in a field where seniority counts every step of the way. Due to this type of environment, the shifts I work are 95% night shifts. I never saw my husband, we rarely had dinner together, and we would just see each other in the morning and at night in bed (which was never a bad thing)! But being a newlywed, I missed having dinner with my husband and going for walks after dinner to just simply grab an ice cream. So as I was watching The Secret on DVD one day, I was inspired to write down all the things in my life I wanted to change or improve. I started on the computer with the basics, then as I moved to my workforce field, I wrote down a list of people I enjoyed working with and people that could possibly join our team. At the same time keeping in mind I wanted more seniority.
I started my new way of thinking in January (as a new resolution), in which I was 10th on the seniority list. By March, here are the things that happened:
3rd guy in line got promoted to manager for another store. 4th girl in line is now on compensation (not that I wished injuries upon her, but she strained her arm at work) and is not returning for months, and when she does its modified work and it will not effect MY hours. The 6th and 7th girls in line got fired. The 8th guy in line quit. And now, as I type this, the 5th girl in line is leaving for an operation and is gone for a few months. Thus leaving me 4th in line, gaining daytime shifts and mega seniority with the new people that joined our team. And to top it off, my boss had a little pep talk with me stating that I am going to be one of the head people at work, and I have to train our new staff the right way on how the store is going to run and how to work efficiently within our scheduled shifts. Not only do I get more hours, but more pay, and now my boss comes to me for advice on scheduling the new staff! I have dinner with my hubby and we can actually spend time together after work.
Going from the “mailroom” up is not so bad if you just BELIEVE!
