I Used To Be Down And Out

For the last couple of weeks I pack a couple of sandwiches, bottled water, and fruit, in case I see a homeless person standing on side of road while I’m driving.
Last Sunday I drove my Dad to Sterling Heights, Michigan for the annual Father’s Day Festival picnic at the German-American club. On our way there we stopped at a Tim Hortons in Ypsilanti, MI. As we pulled off the highway, we saw a homeless woman standing on the edge of the highway exit and Michigan Avenue.
I didn’t have a lunch packed for this lady, so I ordered her an extra sandwich at the Tim Hortons. When I told the counterperson the extra order was for the homeless lady I saw outside, the counterperson surprised me by going to the back and getting a couple of extra donuts for free for this lady. I had no idea my one small act of kindness would elicit such a positive response from so many.
When my Dad and I got back into my car, I struggled to start my GPS system and we worried if we’d be able to hand off the food to the lady, since it was a very busy intersection. As we approached the highway exit-ramp, we were very surprised to see the lady walking directly toward us and on our side of the street.
I believe wholeheartedly that one kind act does not go unrewarded, so I wondered the rest of the drive how The Universe would reward my Dad and I for this extraordinary act of kindness. I got my answer when we arrived at the German-American club in Sterling Heights, MI. At least a few hundred people were at this Father’s Day festival.
The very first people we saw there were my cousin and his friend. It was a very pleasant surprise since neither my father nor I expected to see the two of them there. The four of us then ate plenty of good German food, drank, watched soccer, and shared many, many laughs. I am in total awe of the enormity of the powers of The Universe.
